Northwest Edges Holmes 70-63, Runs Win Streak to Seven Games

GOODMAN – Sophomore Tevin Moore took advantage of his sixth start of the season and posted his first career double-double to help Northwest earn a hard-fought 70-63 win at Holmes in a back-and-forth battle at Frank Branch Coliseum Monday night. | Final Box | Moore Interview

Northwest won its seventh consecutive game – its longest streak since the 2005-06 season – in improving to 12-3 overall and 5-1 in the north division. Holmes fell to 8-9 overall and to 2-4 in the division.

In a game that featured 14 lead changes and eight ties, Northwest took its final lead at the 14:43-mark of the second half on Te. Moore's tip-in off his own miss.

Holmes built its largest lead at six with 8:55 left in the opening 20 minutes while Northwest led by as many as seven with 7:33 to play.

DeMarcus McVay scored 11 of his team-high 15 points in the second half and was on the receiving end of some key assists by Charles Eaton, D.J. Biggs and Rashon Coleman.

Two free throws from the game's high scorer, Enitial Rucker, with 2:57 left in regulation pulled the Northwest lead within a point at 62-61 before a McVay layup and huge Eaton putback extended the lead back to five.

From there Northwest was able to hit a few free throws down the stretch and ended the game on an 8-2 run to hold on for a 70-63 victory.

Behind McVay's 15 points, nine boards and three blocks, Te. Moore added 13 points and 10 rebounds, Eaton had 11 points and Tristan Moore chipped in nine off the bench.

A monster game by Holmes' Rucker, who connected on 6 of 11 from 3-point land and netted 27 points, was all for naught in a Ranger win. Demarcus Lewis chipped in 13 points and nine rebounds.

Northwest outscored Holmes 44-22 in the paint and owned a 49-36 rebounding edge.

The Rangers are back in action on Thursday at Coahoma (8-7, 4-2 north), who is coming off an upset win at East Mississippi. Tipoff from The Pinnacle is set for 8 p.m.
