Rangers Split Opening Day of Northeast TigerFest

BOONEVILLE – The 2012 Northwest softball season got underway on a windy, Friday afternoon at the annual Northeast TigerFest, with the Rangers winning their opener 10-0 in five innings over Lane College before a 9-5 setback to Three Rivers (Mo.) in the nightcap.

Casey Baddley picked up her first collegiate win in three innings of shutout ball against LC, striking out six and giving up just one hit. Emily Hatcher and Casey Gibson then closed the deal, each throwing an inning of scoreless softball.

Northwest scored four runs in the top of the first and never looked back, finishing with 12 hits.

After back-to-back walks issued to Hillari Plummer and Linsey Hebert, the Rangers would score their first run on the first of three LC errors in the game. Natalie Smock and Codie Jones each delivered their first career RBI-hits, and Northwest led 4-0.

The Rangers added single runs in the second, third and fifth and three in the fourth.

Jones had a solo home run in the second and Lauren Riley added a two-run bomb in the fourth, putting the icing on a run-rule win in the season-opener.

Against Three Rivers in the final game of the day, the Lady Raiders broke a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the fifth with Lauren Reinagal's solo home run and added four unanswered runs to knock off Northwest, 9-5.

The top of the Three Rivers lineup went 8-for-11 with six runs scored and four RBIs, while Cendyl Carter held Northwest to just four hits in a complete-game performance.

Northwest (1-1) will close out the TigerFest with three games on Saturday against Indian Hills (9:30 a.m.), Calhoun (11:15 a.m.) and Jefferson College (2:45 p.m.).
