Hinds improved to 3-0 on the year while Northwest fell to 2-1. Head coach Bubba Skelton also had a 36-game regular season home winning streak snapped that stretched back to Nov. 6, 2003.
Northwest outshot Hinds 42 to 38 percent from the floor on the evening, but hit just 16-of-31 from the free throw line while the Bulldogs connected on 24-of-28 attempts.
Behind 48 percent shooting and 10 points from DeMarcus McVay, the Rangers led the entire first half and took a 37-31 lead into the lockerroom. They led by as many as 12 with 13:16 left in the half.
But Hinds found its rhythm in the second half and the shots began to fall. After shooting just 28 percent in the first half, the Bulldogs connected on 50 percent of their shots in the second.
A 13-1 run towards the end of the first half and into the second gave Hinds its first lead of the game, 39-37, with 17:12 left to play. Matthew Hurn sparked the run with the final eight points and closed the night with a game-high 18 off the bench (15 in the second half).
Northwest rallied back with five consecutive points to retake the lead at 42-39 before Dominique Brown's fifth 3-pointer of the night knotted the game a final time at 42-42.
From there, Hurn and the Bulldogs slowly took control of the game and would lead the final 15:32.
Northwest got within a point, 53-52, with 9:19 to play on Tevin Moore's fastbreak layup, but an 8-0 run for the Bulldogs after that proved to be the big run that broke the Rangers.
Hurn was the game's high scorer for Hinds with 18, followed by 15 from Brown, 15 from Greg Lee and 11 from Josh Gaskin. The Rangers were led by McVay's 14 points and 10 boards in addition to 13 from Kenyatta Jones and 11 from D.J. Biggs.
Hinds won the rebounding battle 48-39 and picked up eight blocks on the night.
Northwest will take to the road Nov. 12-13 for the Southwest Coca-Cola Classic in Summit. Northwest will play Co-Lin at 3:30 p.m. Monday and host Southwest at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
