CLARKSDALE – Freshman
Domonique Harris scored a career-high 24 points off the bench and sophomore
A.J. Cunningham had his second double-double of the year by halftime as Northwest ran its season-long winning streak out to four games in a 97-85 road win over Coahoma.
Northwest evened its record to 7-7 on the year and moved into a tie for third place in the north standings at 3-2, while Coahoma dropped to 7-9 overall and 0-5 in division play.
The Rangers led all 40 minutes and by as many as 17 early in the second half, shooting at 53 percent for the night. It marked an eighth time this season that Northwest eclipsed 50 percent shooting from the floor.
Cunningham and the Rangers led 55-40 at the break, with the sophomore chipping in 15 points and 10 boards in the opening half while Harris also contributed 13 of his career-high 24.
Coahoma got within six points on two separate occasions around the 7-minute mark, but Northwest quickly stretched the lead back out to double figures by knocking down key free throws. The Tigers strategically fouled the final 8 minutes of the game and forced the Rangers to keep the lead by hitting their free throws.
Northwest did just that, finishing the night 29-of-39 from the stripe, while Coahoma hit 19-of-31.
Just like the women's game hours earlier, the Rangers played unselfish ball all night long. Northwest dished out a season-high 26 assists on 32 field goals, led by six from Everick Morris, five from Cunningham and four apiece from Harris and Darius Woods.
Five scorers finished in double figures, led by 24 from Harris, 17 from Cunningham, 14 from Jones, 13 from Morris and 12 from DeMarcus McVay. Cunningham poured in 14 rebounds and McVay added nine. Coahoma was paced by 26 points from Stacey Regular, who hit 7-of-11 from downtown.
Northwest will return to Senatobia Monday night to play host to Mississippi Delta (7-8, 1-4 north) with tipoff set for 7 p.m. from Howard Coliseum.
