Rangers Snap Six-Game Road Skid with 77-67 Win at Mid-South

MARION, Ark. – Thanks to stellar bench play and a 19-point, seven-rebound performance from freshman DeMarcus McVay, Northwest snapped a six-game road losing streak dating back to last season with a 77-67 win at Mid-South Tuesday night.

Northwest snapped a four-game losing streak overall, improving to 3-4, while Mid-South dropped to 3-6.

Northwest trailed the entire first half and by as many as eight, 19-11, before pulling within a basket at halftime, 35-32.

The Rangers outshot Mid-South 52 to 47 percent in the opening 20 minutes, but couldn't stop the hot shooting of Louis Mobley and Jalen Smith who combined for 25 points on 10 of 16 shooting.

After falling behind by five, 37-32, on the opening bucket of the second half by Shaquille Gardner, Northwest finally took its first lead minutes later. A.J. Cunningham's 3-pointer at the 17:25-mark gave the Rangers a brief 38-37 lead, but the Greyhounds quickly regained the upper hand and led the ensuing 7 minutes.

Down 50-44 with 12:21 remaining, Northwest put a game-changing run together that would carry them to the road victory. Tevin Moore's 3-pointer off a La'Barron Collins assist jumpstarted a 21-3 run over the next 6:33, turning a six-point deficit into a 65-53 lead with 5:48 left.

From there the Rangers would cruise to the double digit victory, their second-straight over the Greyhounds.

In the most efficient outing of the season, Northwest dished out 25 assists on 31 field goals and shot over 50 percent (55.4) for the fourth time in seven games. Darius Woods, Kenyatta Jones and T. Moore each had five assists, while nine Rangers in total had at least one.

McVay scored 13 of his team-high 19 points in the second half, pacing the Northwest bench who outscored Mid-South 46-13 on the night. Cunningham scored 11 points and added six rebounds, while Bernard Jones chipped in nine points on 4 of 4 shooting and Collins added eight off the bench.

Smith finished with a game-high 20 points, seven boards and five assists for Mid-South, followed by 18 points from Mobley and nine from Josh Walker.
