Turnovers Prove Costly in 99-91 Shootout Loss at Southwest

SUMMIT – Despite a pair of double-doubles from freshman DeMarcus McVay and sophomore A.J. Cunningham along with 56 percent shooting on the night, Northwest couldn't overcome a season-high 26 turnovers and a late run from host Southwest, as they fell 99-91 on Monday night at the annual Coca-Cola Classic Tournament.

Southwest evened its record to 3-3 and earned a season split with Northwest, who fell to 2-3.

Both teams opened the game at a furious pace up-and-down the court and came out firing. The game featured five ties and three lead changes the opening 6:23, until Northwest gained the upper hand with a big run.

Leading by one with 11:38 left in the opening period, freshman Tevin Moore knocked down a pair of free throws after grabbing an offensive board and jumpstarted a 13-0 run for the Rangers that opened up a 36-22 lead with 8:45 left in the half.

The momentum shifted, however, in favor of the home team the final 5 minutes as the Bears were able to trim what was a 15 point lead down to seven, 48-41, at the half.

After shooting a scorching 71 percent with 3 minutes left in the opening period, Northwest would close the half at 59 percent shooting against 46 percent shooting for Southwest.

Northwest maintained a slight lead the opening 8:31 of the second half until Mark Bridgewater connected on two free throws after a technical foul and also added a layup, allowing Southwest to take its first lead since the 13:55-mark of the first half, 66-65.

The teams went back-and-forth the ensuing 8 minutes and neither led by more than three, with the game tied a 12th and final time, 88-88 with 2:06 to play.

A loose ball foul allowed Bridgewater to sink two more free throws that gave Southwest its final lead, 90-88, as Northwest went the final 2 minutes attempting just one field goal and turned the ball over three times.

Cory Lacy put the finishing touches on a monster second half with a breakaway dunk with 58 seconds left, as Southwest closed the game on an 11-3 run.

Southwest outscored Northwest 58-43 in the second half, led by Lacy who scored 19 of his game-high 26 points the final 20 minutes.

McVay had a team-high 23 points and added 11 boards for a double-double for Northwest, in addition to Cunningham's 19 points and 11 rebounds. Jordan Hulsey chipped in 17 points, while T. Moore added nine points and nine rebounds and Darius Woods added nine points and a season-high 11 assists.

Northwest looks to bounce back against Copiah-Lincoln tomorrow at 3 p.m. on the final day of the Classic. The Wolves topped the Rangers just four days ago in Wesson, 71-58.
