WESSON – Northwest's recent road woes continued on Thursday night at Mullen Gymnasium, as the host Copiah-Lincoln Wolves picked up a 71-58 win over the Rangers behind four scorers in double figures and hot 3-point shooting.
Co-Lin improved to 2-2 on the year while Northwest dropped to 2-2 and lost for the 10th time in 13 tries away from Howard Coliseum the last two seasons.
Backed by seven points from A.J. Cunningham, Northwest started the game off hot hitting 6 of 9 shots and took an early 15-8 lead 6:12 into the game.
A pair of runs over the final 13:48 for both teams, a 19-2 run for Co-Lin and 11-4 run for Northwest, shifted the momentum in different directions and made it a 31-28 game at the half.
Northwest outshot Co-Lin 42 to 39 percent in a first half that saw five lead changes.
A Marshun McGee 3-pointer and back-to-back layups from Fred Fairman jumpstarted a 9-0 run over the opening 4:07 of the second half for Co-Lin, as the Wolves built a 40-28 lead.
Northwest climbed back in the game the ensuing six minutes and got to within five, 47-42, with 9 minutes left. Cunningham scored seven of his game-high 18 points during the Rangers' 9-0 run and Willie Williams contributed a big tip-in, but Northwest wouldn't get any closer the rest of the way.
Behind Cunningham's season-high 18 points, Darius Woods added 10 and Kenyatta Jones, Tevin Moore and Williams chipped in six apiece. Co-Lin was paced by 17 points from McGee and 13 from Fairman.
Northwest will continue a five-game road swing on Monday, traveling to Summit for the annual Coca-Cola Classic. The Rangers will play host Southwest at 7 p.m. on Monday, followed by a 3 p.m. contest against Co-Lin on Tuesday.
