Bobby Ferguson was an all-conference quarterback and free safety during his junior and senior years at Magnolia Heights School. He received the All-Star Game Offensive MVP award his senior year. 

Ferguson played at Northwest during the 1979-80 seasons under the guidance of legendary head coach Bobby Franklin and excelled as an All-State punter/kicker both of his years. 

During his sophomore year, he recorded his longest field goal of 51 yards and is listed in the Northwest record books at No. 1 in single-season punt attempts with 64 and No. 2 in single-season punting yards with 2,410.

He continued his football career at New Mexico where he was the punter for the Lobos. At UNM, Ferguson recorded a season average of 38.9 yards per punt his junior year and 42.4 yards per punt his senior year. He was also named second-team All-Western Athletic Conference Punter.

He also played baseball at Northwest under head coach Jim Miles and received the All-State first baseman award and the Tim Robbins MVP award.
